Artist Statement: My work addresses a series of questions that come out of my interest in the physical world.  The subject of my work is the concrete versus the non concrete – the measurable versus the immeasurable, the known and the unknown, perception versus thought and a playful exploration through visual unity, rupture, composition, balance, and transparency.

Elizabeth Chiles is a contemporary photographer working in medium format color film.    Her pictures and photographic objects, while founded in the urban and manicured landscapes of her immediate surroundings, gesture at metaphysical questions as they explore the mysteries visible in the world.  Chiles has shown at John Cleary Gallery, The Austin Museum of Art, The Chelsea Art Museum, Stanford University, San Francisco City Hall and Women and Their Work among other venues.  She holds a BA in Art History from Columbia University and an MFA from San Francisco Art Institute. She has work in important collections in the US and Europe and was included in the 2010 The Collector’s Guide to New Art Photography, curated by Vanessa Kramer, head of photographs at Phillips de Pury. She is a professor of art and theory at the University of Texas at Austin, Texas State University and Southwestern University.
