STAY TUNED FOR 2020 DATES!

Please join Leslie Baldwin and Jasmine DeFoore for a weekend of shooting and editing in Austin, Texas! You’ll be given a “destination travel story” assignment, with specific locations and a shot list to complete. You’ll edit with Leslie and Jasmine, present your work, gain valuable feedback and more.

Class size is limited to 12 students.

Schedule:

Friday, April 26, 2019
3:30-7pm

  • Leslie will present specific examples of effective travel assignment photography and talk about the mix of images that are needed to create a strong story.
  • she will give real-world advice on what to look for when shooting on location, as well as tips for how to get a good mix of images that can be turned into a feature story photo essay.
  • Editorial and commercial photographer Buff Strickland will show recent work she’s shot for magazines, talk about how she approaches a feature story, the questions/clarifications she has for the editor before shooting, and how she gets everyday people to feel comfortable when being photographed. Q&A to follow.
  • Students will be given their assignments, which will include 3-4 specific locations (restaurants, boutiques, etc) within one geographic area. Your shot list will include a mix of environmental portraits, landscapes, details, and interiors.

After we break, students will start working on their assignments.

Saturday, April 27, 2019

Morning til 1pm

  • Students continue shooting their assignments on location.
  • Leslie and Jasmine will be available via phone/text to answer any questions that pop up on location. Students can send previews of images for quick feedback.

1pm – 5pm: Editing

  • Working lunch, food and drinks will be provided
  • Return to studio headquarters to edit work. Each student will receive 30 minutes of one-on-one editing time with Leslie or Jasmine
  • Each student will prepare a 20-picture edit that best shows the variety of images made. Leslie and Jasmine will help each student edit that down to 10 pictures and sequence them for a cohesive narrative.

5 – 6pm: Marketing discussion and Q&A

  • Jasmine will present ideas for how to market destination work to ad agencies, magazines and corporations. She will show specific examples of marketing efforts that work and answer your questions about marketing.
  • Leslie will discuss how to get the attention of a photo editor, including how and when to pitch story ideas, showing portfolios and what she likes (and hates) about email and print promos.

6 – 7pm: Group Slideshow

  • Group slideshow: Each student will get a chance to show their final edit to the group and discuss the work, challenges and overall experience.

Class dismissed! Anyone who would like to join will head over to ABGB (right across the street) for some drinks and food.

Leslie BaldwinLeslie Baldwin was the director of photography for Texas Monthly from 2003 – 2018. She earned degrees in fine arts and art history from the University of Texas, after which she moved to Brooklyn, New York.

She worked a variety of freelance gigs, the highlight of which was running Matt Mahurin’s photo studio, followed by a four-year stint as cover coordinator for Time magazine.

After eight years in New York city, a little homesick and a lot hungry for genuine Tex-Mex, Baldwin jumped at an offer from Texas Monthly and moved back to Austin in 2003. She is currently an adjunct professor at Austin Community College teaching photojournalism. She is married and has a daughter in middle school.

jasmine defoore bio pic_annie_smallJasmine DeFoore is a freelance photo editor and marketing consultant. Her marketing efforts have won PDN Self Promo Awards and her editing has helped photographers gain recognition from World Press Photo, American Photography and other elite competitions.

Prior to starting her own company, she was a photographer’s representative and Director of Marketing at the award-winning agency Redux Pictures.

Recent editorial clients include Dell, AFAR, AARP, Texas Tribune, and Texas Book Festival.


Buff Strickland is a commercial and editorial photographer who shoots lifestyle, food, interiors and kids. She has 20 years of experience shooting for clients across the country on productions both big and small.

Buff was born and raised in Texas and has been taking pictures for as long as she can remember. She started her career working in advertising and marketing in San Francisco while taking photography classes at UC Berkley. She was inspired to quit her day job after a soul-searching road trip and never looked back.

Buff’s passion for photography brought her to New York City in 2000. She traveled extensively
shooting for brands such as Hilton Hotels, Lee Jeans and publications such as HGTV, Parents
Magazine, Country Living, Food Network Magazine, Travel + Leisure. In 2011 Buff and her
family moved their home base to Austin and happily traded her tiny apartment for a house with
a yard.
