Blanton Lecture: Shifting Frontiers: Scientific Thought & Landscape Painting in 19th-Century America

Jennifer Raab, the inaugural Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, discusses the tensions between landscape painting and photography during the 19th century. The talk focuses on how depictions of landscape engage with scientific developments of the period and artists in both the American Scenery and Go West! exhibitions.
